The Health Department has as its strategic objective “the accessibility and quality of health services are improved”.

The Catholic Diocese of Gikongoro has eleven (11) Health Centers which serve a population equal to 230,398 people distributed in three as follows:

  1. Nyamagabe Districts: 108,653 peoples
  2. Nyaruguru District: 91,837 peoples
  3. Nyanza: 29,908 peoples

To increase the use of health services at the Health Centers level we organize:

The mobilization on health mutual insurance and use of health services

At the beginning of each annual budget, the community mobilization on health insurance payment is organized at cell. Where population acquire all information about health services and poor peoples are assisted for health insurance.

 The monitoring and evaluation of Health Centers ‘activities, is made through supervision / field visits to the health centers and quarterly coordination meetings, where health indicators are analyzed, and recommendations for further improvements are made.

World day of sick

In collaboration with the parishes, the Health Centers organize a World Day of sick from 11 February according to their activities ‘plan. The day is made by a Holy Mass for the sick, visits and social assistance (food, clothing and hygiene materials) to them.

Promotion of natural family planning methods

The promotion of natural family planning methods was done through the awareness about NFP, provision of initial and ongoing training for educators, and monitoring of couples who use those methods. In the community we also do the strengthening of the capacities of family facilitators and monitor their activities.

Nutrition

For better child development, we do child development monitoring through early childhood development program in the community, cooking demonstration on balanced diet, distribution of cooking demonstration kits and fruits trees to the households. More than 13,158 children are monitored in our program through ECD services.
